Introduction to Neuroscience: Understanding the Brain and How Children Engage in Play Therapy Description

There has been much research emerging over the last few years stating play therapy has an impact on brain development.  Understanding neuroscience and the developing brain helps the Play Therapist understand the child client on a deeper level, as well as understanding how the entire Play Therapy process works. Discover how Play Therapy is instrumental in connecting the left brain regions and the right brain regions, providing the neuroplasticity a developing brain needs to build new neural networks to overcome adverse experiences. During this training, Teresa will uncover how the developing brain engages in environments, and how the relationship between the child and therapist facilitates the ability to connect, be creative and engage in playful expression, ultimately allowing the brain to rewire from the bottom up.

Introduction to Neuroscience: Understanding the Brain and How Children Engage in Play Therapy Objectives

  • Participants discuss the emerging research that informs the Play Therapist’s presence and intervention in Play Therapy.
  • Participants explain the components of the Play Therapy process and the therapeutic relationship that promotes healing.
  • Participants explore child development and its impact on brain development and a child’s play behaviors.
  • Participants will recite at least two interventions for Play Therapy to promote the Therapeutic Powers of Play through physical movement, creative expression and emotion regulation.
