Counseling As Prevention
When considering counseling as a prevention or as a recovery effort, it takes thought. As preventive measure, counseling should be sought in situations that can be foreseen where preparation is the active response. For example, when looking to change careers or moving to a new city for a new career opportunity. With these type of life changes, counseling can assist with the anxiety (low or high) that will accompany such a major life transition. Another example where counseling should be sought as a prevention is when deciding to get married or entering a committed exclusive relationship. Pre-marital or pre-relationship counseling can assist couples with addressing subjects such as communication, cultural differences, finances, and parenting styles that are common to all relationships.
Counseling As Recovery
As a recovery measure, counseling should be sought when the pressures and circumstances of life break us and we need help putting the pieces back together. When we unexpectedly lose our job and anxiety fills our thoughts day and night, counseling should be sought. When our marriages or relationships are under the weight of distress, counseling should be sought. When depression robs us of our day-to-day routine and regulates us to a pleasureless life of existence, we should seek counseling.
