Developmental Trauma and Play Therapy Description

Developmental trauma and play therapy uncovers many concepts that include how children who have experienced developmental trauma are often misunderstood. They may present with symptoms that have resulted in a diagnosis of Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder, Intermittent Explosive Disorder, in addition to anxiety and depressive symptoms. This often leaves families in distress and children being mislabeled. In this training, we will explore the impact of traumatic events on the development of children, including their brains, big emotions and resulting behaviors. We will explore the criteria for several childhood diagnoses and compare them to the diagnostic presentation of Developmental Trauma. Explore assessment techniques, interventions and ways to engage and involve the important people and other caregivers in the child’s life throughout the Play Therapy journey.

Developmental Trauma and Play Therapy Objectives

  • Demonstrate at least three ways to assess for developmental trauma with parents/guardians/caregivers and the child in the Play Therapy process
  • Discover trauma informed approaches, including affect and emotion regulation when working with developmental trauma
  • Compare and describe the DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria for cPTSD and DTD, and ways these symptoms are misunderstood
  • Discuss playful strategies to work with parents/guardians/caregivers in the child’s healing journey
